Jasprit Bumrah is unlikely to feature in the five-match ODI series against New Zealand. That is according to a Times of India report, where Sahil Malhotra revealed that the BCCI is managing Bumrah’s workload ahead of the two-match Test series in November.

Bumrah’s participation has been managed since suffering back and knee issues in recent years. The 32-year-old is understood to be preparing for the Test series as we speak, and will spend time at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence before flying to New Zealand.

India will play five ODIs in New Zealand, but Jasprit Bumrah is unlikely to feature

Bumrah’s management is part of a few moving parts in India’s ODI series against the Black Caps. The series begins on November 4 and ends November 15, just four days before the opening Test in Wellington.

Shubman Gill could play in just the first three matches before shifting focus to the Tests. Bumrah is expected to play for India A on November 6, which is 13 days out from the first Test.

A source told TOI that India’s quest to reach the World Test Championship (WTC) Final is of utmost priority.

“Bumrah is completely fit, but for a long tour, it’s important to prioritise. The Test series is very important, so there’s no point making Bumrah slog it out in the ODIs and then suddenly shift focus to red-ball cricket. He is the leader of the bowling pack, and a fresh, ready Bumrah is the priority right now,” said the source.

“The plan is not just for New Zealand, but discussions are also happening for the BGT [five Tests against Australia] next year. There is no point wasting Bumrah for inconsequential bilaterals. Right now, the WTC is the focus, and all energies will be directed at planning for that.”

India are currently fifth in the WTC standings with a 51.52 win percentage. New Zealand are currently second with 72.22. Shubman Gill’s team is in must-win territory if they are to make a late run to reach the final, which will be played at The Oval in June 2027.
