BackThe guavas were meant for the players. But during the innings break of the fourth T20I against India, it was West Indies head coach Daren Sammy who seemed to be making the most of them.
With a plate full of the fruit in hand, Sammy looked completely at ease as he walked around, passing on instructions to his batters and having a word in Rovman Powell’s ear. Soon enough, he was walking off alongside 12th man Kamil Pooran, the two chatting away while munching on guavas.
IND vs WI 4th T20I: Updates | Scorecard
It was an amusing little moment in a break that had otherwise belonged to the West Indies’ batters. They had just hammered their way to a massive 247 for three, putting India under considerable pressure ahead of the chase.
Sammy had every reason to be relaxed. His captain, Shai Hope, had led from the front with a sensational unbeaten 102 off just 50 balls. Hope smashed nine sixes and four fours, making a mockery of the Indian bowling attack as he powered the visitors to a commanding total.
Sherfane Rutherford provided the perfect finishing touch, remaining unbeaten on 49 off 26 deliveries. He struck four fours and three sixes, cashing in after being dropped on 42 by Mayank Yadav.
The pair's late assault ensured the West Indies finished with a flourish, leaving India with a mountain to climb.
Prince Yadav was India's best bowler on the night, returning figures of 1 for 36 from his four overs. The rest of the attack struggled to contain the Caribbean batters, with Hope and Rutherford dictating terms.
Amid all the big hitting and the mounting pressure on India, Sammy's guava moment offered a lighter scene. The fruit appeared to be part of the team's efforts to replenish themselves during the break, but the head coach was happily joining in, even as he continued to discuss the game with his players.
With 247 runs on the board, Sammy could afford to enjoy a snack. His batters, meanwhile, had given themselves a brief breather before the real work began in the field.
