Somerset duo James and Thomas Rew have been named in the England Lions T20 and 50-over squads for next month’s tour of the Caribbean - with the younger brother captaining the team in the shorter format.
The Lions will play West Indies A in three T20s and five 50-over matches in St Kitts and Nevis, with Rew, 18, will lead the T20 team while Dan Lawrence will be in charge for the five-match 50-over series.
Rew captained the Young Lions to the final of the ICC Men’s U19s World Cup earlier this year and has been called into the England Men’s squad for the T20 series in Australia. He - along with Eddie Jack and James Coles - will fly out for that series after the Lions’ third match of their 50-over series in St Kitts and Nevis. James Rew meanwhile will be involved for the full series as he looks to impress
England Lions Head Coach, Jonathan Trott, said: “I’m excited to get to work with a hugely talented group of players starting with this white-ball tour of the Caribbean.
“I’ve spoken about how important the Lions was in my career and now it’s my role to help prepare younger players for what lays ahead of them in international cricket.
“I also want to create a culture where England players will benefit from coming back and working in this environment to push for national team selection across formats and by performing and helping the Lions to win games of cricket.
“This squad has a mix of Centrally Contracted and Development Contract players which reflects some of the highest performing and most precious talent around the game.”
