BackNew Delhi, October 17 (Daily Kiran) : Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer has officially submitted his application for the senior national selector position with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This vacancy arose following the conclusion of Ajit Agarkar’s term.
Jaffer confirmed his application from the western region, aligning with the BCCI’s criteria for candidates. To qualify, applicants must have played at least seven Test matches, 30 first-class matches, or a combination of ten One Day Internationals and 20 first-class matches. The chief selector is typically the individual with the most Test experience among the selectors.
If selected, Jaffer could assume the role of chief selector, as he has more Test match experience than current committee members Pragyan Ojha, Shiv Sundar Das, Rudra Pratap Singh, and Ajay Ratra. Ojha, who has played 24 Tests, holds the most experience in the current committee and has been appointed interim chairman.
The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which includes Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjpe, will make the final decision on Jaffer’s appointment. The 48-year-old Jaffer played 31 Tests for India between 2000 and 2008, scoring 1,944 runs, including five centuries and a double century against West Indies and Pakistan. He also played two One Day Internationals.
Jaffer is a prominent figure in domestic cricket, having primarily represented Mumbai and also played for Vidarbha. He holds the record for the most runs and centuries in Ranji Trophy history. Across 260 first-class matches, he has amassed over 19,410 runs at an average exceeding 50, with 57 centuries to his name.
