BackFormer India cricketer Wasim Jaffer has applied for the post of senior men's chief selector. The development comes after Ajit Agarkar's tenure came to an end. The development was confirmed by Jaffer to PTI. "Yes, I have applied for the job," Jaffer told PTI.
There were reports that Pragyan Ojha, who is part of the selection committee, might be promoted as tghe chief selector following Agarkar's exit, however, Jaffer's entry has added another twist to the race to the head of selection commitee. Jaffer brings more experience to the table, having played seven more Tests than Pragyan Ojha, who has represented India in 24 Tests. The other selectors on the current panel are RP Singh, Ajay Ratra and Shiv Sunder Das.
The 48-year-old Wasim Jaffer played 31 Tests for India between 2000 and 2008. He scored 1,944 runs at an average of 34.10, including five centuries, with double-centuries against West Indies and Pakistan. He played only two ODIs, both in 2006.
Jaffer has an outstanding record in domestic cricket. He is the highest run-scorer and has hit the most centuries in Ranji Trophy history. In first-class cricket, he scored 19,410 runs and 57 centuries in 260 matches at an average of over 50. He began his senior career with Mumbai in the 1996-97 season before retiring from all forms of cricket while representing Vidarbha.
If the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape, selects Jaffer as the chairman of the selection committee, he would have played the most Tests among the candidates and would therefore lead the panel.
