The Big Bash League (BBL) is gearing up to take a big step towards becoming a global T20 competition, with Chennai set to host the opening match of the upcoming 2026-27 season. The decision to bring a BBL match to India has already received a strong response from cricket fans.

The Big Bash League 2026-27 season opener between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers will be played at the iconic Chepauk Stadium in Chennai on December 12. Amid this, Aneurin Donald set for BBL debut after white-ball series in Australia.

BBL 2026-27 opener creates massive buzz in Chennai, Cricket Australia eyes 35,000 fans

The early ticket sales for the BBL 2026-27 opener have been so encouraging that the match has already become the best-selling game of the season so far. Cricket Australia (CA) is now looking to draw close to 35,000 fans and aim for a full house at the Chepauk Stadium.

"The match in Chennai will help boost the popularity of the BBL around the world," Big Bash Leagues head Alistair Dobson said. He believes that T20 cricket is growing beyond national borders and that major leagues like the IPL and the BBL need to build a strong global presence.

Dobson said, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo, "Very confident [about raising the profile of the BBL this season]. " I think we all can see all cricket fans can see the globalisation of T20 cricket and the importance for the biggest of leagues, including the IPL and the BBL, to be able to exist and perform on a global stage, not just in our own country.”

Big Bash League sets sights on global market

He further stressed that the Big Bash League wants cricket fans from different countries to watch its matches. The league also aims to attract the best players from around the world to both its men's and women's competitions.

He believes the BBL is no longer limited to growing only in Australia and is continuing to develop into a competition with fans and influence across the world. Amid this, 'India earn millions, West Indies get nothing': CWI CEO questions cricket’s financial model.

The BBL boss added, “So, whether that's from a fan perspective that we want fans all around the world tuning into the BBL... but equally and importantly that all the best players from around the world want to come and be part of our competition – whether that's our men's league or our women's league.”

BBL targets global audience with Chennai opener as ticket demand surprises organisers

The response to ticket sales has given Cricket Australia (CA) further reason to feel positive. Around 2,000 tickets were sold within the first 30 minutes of sales last weekend. Due to the strong demand, more tickets were made available to the public for the upcoming season opener.

The BBL's plan to take a match outside Australia comes at a time when major sports competitions are expanding into new markets. The NFL and NBA are among the leading sporting organisations that have taken events beyond their traditional home countries.

Earlier in September, the Melbourne Cricket Ground hosted an NFL match between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers, marking the league's first game on Australian soil.

Why did BBL choose India for its historic opener?

So, the Chennai opener is being seen as a big attempt to take a cricket league match to a new international audience. Dobson believes the BBL is already among the leading T20 leagues in the world, and the Chennai match will help strengthen that position.

He signed off by saying, “We believe the BBL is in the top couple of leagues globally, and certainly part of the objective here is reinforcing that. There's no better place to do that than in India amongst the most passionate T20 fans and cricket fans in the world. I think the response... We know the BBL is already really popular in India.”
