Punam Raut announced her retirement from all forms of international cricket on Thursday, October 15, 2026. The former India opener made the announcement through an Instagram statement, closing a career that stretched across more than 17 years at the highest level.

Raut made her ODI debut against West Indies in March 2009 and played her final international match, an ODI against England, in June 2021. Over that period, she represented India in three ODI World Cups and four T20 World Cups, establishing herself as one of the more dependable top-order batters in the women's game.

"From the streets of Mumbai to wearing the Indian jersey, this journey has been nothing short of a blessing. A journey filled with sacrifices, struggles, unforgettable victories, tough lessons, and moments I will cherish for a lifetime. Representing India was never just a dream fulfilled; it was a privilege I carried with immense pride," Raut wrote in her Instagram post reflecting on the journey.

What did Punam Raut achieve across formats in her international career?

Raut accumulated 2,299 runs in 73 ODIs at an average of 34.83, with three hundreds and 15 fifties to her name. She scored 719 runs across 35 T20 International appearances. Her Test career, limited to four matches, yielded 264 runs and a career-best score of 130 against South Africa in 2014.

The 2017 Women's World Cup stands out as the peak of her career. Raut scored 381 runs across the tournament, including a century of 109 against Ireland in which she and Deepti Sharma put together a record 320-run opening partnership. She then contributed 86 in the final against England at Lord's, as India fell narrowly short of the title.

Her international career also included a notable chapter in the day-night Test against Australia in 2021, where she scored 36 in the first innings. That match drew wider attention when Raut chose to walk off after edging a delivery to the keeper, even though the on-field umpire had ruled in her favour. The moment was widely praised as a display of sportsmanship.

Raut, who turned 37 on October 14, 2026, expressed her gratitude in the retirement statement.

"As I close this chapter of my international cricket career, my heart is filled with gratitude for everyone who believed in me, stood by me, and became a part of my journey. Cricket gave me more than a career. It gave me a purpose, an identity, and a family," she wrote.

What comes next for Punam Raut after stepping away from international cricket?

Raut has made clear that her association with cricket will not end with her playing days. In her Instagram statement, she pointed towards a future role centred on contributing back to the sport.

"The player in me may step aside, but the love for this game will never retire. My next innings is about giving back to the game that gave me everything," she concluded.

No specific details about her plans beyond this statement have been confirmed at this stage.
