BackSouth Africa and Australia head to Cape Town for the Test series decider, with the Proteas hoping recent results count for more than the record books.
Australia have won 10 of the 14 Tests played between the sides in Cape Town. South Africa have won four, and none has ended in a draw.
Australia won the first six Tests at the ground, in 1902, 1921, 1936, 1949-50, 1957-58 and 1966-67, including an innings win by 78 runs in 1936 and another by 141 runs in 1957-58. South Africa’s first win there came in January 1970, by 170 runs. Australia then won in 1994, 2002 and 2006, so they had won nine of the first ten.
The pattern has changed since 2009. South Africa won that Test by an innings and 20 runs, and took the 2011 Test by eight wickets after bowling Australia out for 47 in their second innings. Australia won by 245 runs in 2014, and South Africa won by 322 runs in 2018. That is three South African wins in the last four.
Both teams arrive with a result behind them. Australia won the first Test at Kingsmead by 214 runs, and South Africa levelled the series with an innings and 31-run win in Gqeberha. The winner at Newlands takes the series.
