Maxwell leaves behind a career defined by aggressive batting, useful off-spin and outstanding fielding. Glenn Maxwell retires as one of Australia's greats

Maxwell's decision marks the end of an international career that began with his ODI debut against Afghanistan in August 2012. He went on to become an important part of Australia's limited-overs setup, helping the team win the 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cups, as well as the 2021 T20 World Cup.

One of his most memorable performances came against Afghanistan during the 2023 ODI World Cup in Mumbai. Australia were struggling at 91/7 while chasing 292, with their hopes of reaching the target appearing almost over. Maxwell, however, produced an extraordinary innings under difficult physical conditions.

Battling severe cramps and struggling to move freely, he scored an unbeaten 201 from just 128 deliveries. His innings included 21 fours and 10 sixes, while he shared an unbroken 202-run partnership with Pat Cummins, who contributed 12 runs. Maxwell's effort took Australia to a remarkable three-wicket victory and secured their place in the semi-finals.

Known for his inventive strokeplay and ability to clear the boundary from unusual positions, Maxwell earned the nickname 'The Big Show'. He also contributed with his off-spin and athletic fielding, making him a valuable all-round option for Australia.
