BackMumbai Indians have appointed Kieron Pollard as their head coach for IPL 2027, promoting the former West Indies all-rounder from his role as the franchise’s batting coach. The appointment follows Mahela Jayawardene’s exit from the position and marks another step in Pollard’s long association with the five-time IPL champions.
Kieron Pollard has been part of Mumbai Indians since 2010, first establishing himself as one of the franchise’s most influential players before moving into coaching.
Mumbai Indians have turned to a familiar figure to lead their team into the 2027 season, elevating Pollard to head coach after his stint as batting coach. The decision keeps the former all-rounder within the franchise’s leadership setup and gives him responsibility for guiding a squad he knows from years of playing and working alongside its members.
Kieron Pollard joined MI as a player in 2010 and became one of the defining figures of their most successful period.
Mumbai Indians co-owner Nita M. Ambani welcomed the promotion, highlighting Kieron Pollard’s long-standing connection with the franchise and his understanding of what it means to represent the team.
“Pollard joined Mumbai Indians as a young 22-year-old and, over the past sixteen years, has become an integral part of our family. As a player, he gave us many unforgettable moments, and as a coach, he has continued to share his experience, passion and deep understanding of the game. We are delighted to see him take on this new responsibility as Head Coach.
"Polly knows what it means to wear the MI jersey and what it takes to play for the Paltan. I am confident that he will bring the same commitment, belief and determination to this role. I wish him every success as he leads the team into its next chapter,” Ambani said.
Pollard described the appointment as a significant moment in his career, pointing to the relationship he has built with Mumbai Indians over more than a decade. Having experienced the franchise as both a player and a coach, he also acknowledged the responsibility attached to leading the team.
The former West Indies international thanked Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani and the wider MI setup for their confidence in him. He also outlined his focus on working with the players and support staff, developing talent and continuing the franchise’s established legacy.
“It is a honour to take on the role of Head Coach of Mumbai Indians. MI has been a huge part of my life and career, and the bond I share with this team, the players and the Paltan means a great deal to me. Having experienced this journey as a player and then as a coach, I understand what Mumbai Indians stands for and the responsibility that comes with representing the Blue and Gold. I am grateful to Mrs. Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani and the entire MI family for their trust in me. I look forward to working closely with the players and support staff, building on the team’s legacy, helping our talent grow and giving the Paltan many more reasons to celebrate,” Pollard said.
Pollard’s appointment comes on the back of a playing career that made him one of Mumbai Indians’ most recognisable names. He was a key part of the franchise’s title-winning campaigns and became known for his power-hitting, ability to finish close matches and useful medium-pace bowling.
In the IPL, Kieron Pollard played 189 matches for Mumbai Indians, scoring 3,412 runs in 171 innings at an average of 28.67 and a strike rate of 147.32. His tally included 16 half-centuries, with a highest score of 87 not out. He struck 218 fours and 223 sixes, underlining the impact of his aggressive batting in the middle and lower order.
Kieron Pollard also contributed with the ball, taking 69 wickets in 107 innings for MI. He conceded 2,180 runs from 1,488 balls at an average of 31.59 and an economy rate of 8.79. His best bowling figures were 4/44, and he recorded one four-wicket haul.
However, Pollard's legacy is more than just numbers, as he single-handedly won numerous matches for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League.
