BackOn Tuesday, October 27, India successfully chased down a target of 199 in just 13.2 overs at Wellington in the third T20I against New Zealand. The pursuit was executed with clinical precision, as though the task posed no real difficulty. Abhishek Sharma brought up his fifty in 15 balls and reached his fourth T20I century in 35 balls, finishing unbeaten on 113 off 38 deliveries. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi batted superbly at the other end, and the two added 133 for the first wicket in just 7.1 overs. India raced to 118 without loss in the powerplay, which is a T20I record.
After the match, Abhishek moved the attention away from his own century and onto what Sanju Samson had done for the team. He said the whole dressing room had picked up on Samson's sacrifice, and that it had made the afternoon easier for everybody who went out to bat.
Abhishek Sharma spoke about the team's approach and the role Samson played in enabling India's aggressive mindset. He emphasised that every player in the squad had demonstrated a willingness to sacrifice personal preference for the collective good.
"We opened today, Sanju bhai opens first, we can see that everyone in the team is selfless. I feel that the atmosphere that the team showed today, it will be easy for everyone," Abhishek said in a video released by BCCI.
"Like Sanju bhai played his innings in the last 2 matches, I feel everyone, someone is going at his position like Sanju bhai showed his character, I feel whole team did," he added.
To understand Abhishek's point, it helps to look at how India's batting order changed through the series. In the first T20I in Christchurch, Samson and Abhishek opened the innings, with Tilak Varma coming in at number three. Samson set the tone in a chase of 226 with 67 off 33 balls and was named Player of the Match.

When Kishan picked up an injury and missed the second T20I, Sooryavanshi was brought in at number three, while Samson and Abhishek continued as the opening pair. For the third match, the order was reshuffled. Abhishek and Sooryavanshi opened, which is the role the young left-hander usually plays, and Samson, who has done well at the top and mostly bats there, was demoted to number three. He gave up a place he had made his own, purely for the sake of the team combination.
Samson's willingness to accept a different role in the batting order demonstrated the team's flexibility and unity. Abhishek pointed to Samson's performances in the earlier matches and explained how readily the senior batter had embraced a new position in the lineup.
