Mohammed Shami has made an emotional admission about his future in domestic cricket, reaffirming his deep connection to Bengal after the team's Ranji Trophy win over Services. The 36-year-old fast bowler was absent from the match that began on October 18 at Palam A Stadium in Delhi, with the decision attributed to rest as a precaution following his recent international workload.

Speaking after Bengal's victory, Shami reflected on his relationship with the state team that has shaped his career. His last international appearance came in March 2025 during the Champions Trophy, where he claimed nine wickets. Shami was rested for the fixture as a precaution, though sources close to team management indicated the decision may have been his own. Before the match, he spent time with physios and was observed walking gingerly, raising concerns he may have picked up a niggle during his recent international commitments.

"As far as Bengal cricket is concerned, this is the team that has given me a name. And whenever I end my career, it will be with this team," Shami said as quoted by myKhel.

Shami's commitment to Bengal reflects the deep bond many Indian cricketers maintain with their domestic teams despite international success. The pacer has been a cornerstone of Bengal's bowling attack in recent seasons, and his statements underscore the significance of the domestic circuit in shaping his legacy.

What did Shami say about his Bengal future?

Earlier in the Ranji Trophy season, Shami demonstrated his value to Bengal by picking up 4 for 30 in the first innings against Delhi in the team's season opener, finishing with five wickets in that match while bowling 35.3 overs overall. Bengal faced the Services match without several key players, as Akash Deep and Mukesh Kumar were both engaged with India A duties during the same period. Shami's absence from the Services fixture meant Bengal relied on other bowling resources, yet the team secured victory, highlighting the depth available to the state unit.

Shami's perspective on the domestic season reflects his belief in the value of Ranji Trophy cricket for all players, regardless of their international status. His comments came at a time when he was overlooked for India's upcoming New Zealand tour, making his focus on Bengal cricket particularly significant.

"I don't know what will happen or what won't. But there can't be anything better for any player than the fact that the domestic season has started," Shami said.
