BackInnings Ireland 286 (Stirling 60, Carmichael 59, Mehidy 3-50) vs Bangladesh
Ireland's two remaining wickets lasted just 13 minutes against Bangladesh on the second morning of the Sylhet Test. Taijul Islam struck in the second over of the day, removing Matthew Humphreys, who missed a sweep and was trapped lbw for a duck. Hasan Mahmud wrapped up the innings soon after, bowling Barry McCarthy for 31.
Overall, both Taijul and Mahmud finished with two wickets each, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked up three. Nahid Rana claimed the other wicket to fall.
The visitors' total was slightly above the average first-innings score at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, though at least four of their batters had been well set for bigger contributions.
Earlier on the first day, Ireland's decision to bat first looked like a good decision, at least in the first session. Although they lost captain Andy Balbirnie in the first over, Paul Stirling and Murray Carmichael took control of the Bangladesh bowlers. Stirling was busy playing the cut and square-drives, while Carmichael consolidated in his maiden Test innings. Bangladesh's fielding woes continued, as they dropped three catches in as many overs - and two more later in the day.
However, the bowlers kept their discipline, which was rewarded from the second session. Rana removed Stirling, who top scored with 60, early in the second session, before Mehidy trapped Harry Tector lbw cheaply. Carmichael reached his fifty, before edging Mehidy for 59. Curtis Campher and Lorcan Tucker attempted to revive the innings, but both got out in their forties.
Campher became Hasan Murad's maiden Test wicket, before he added Tucker too, stumped on 41. Jordan Neill, also on debut, looked confident as he made his way to 30 late in the day. However, he fell to the last ball of the day, lbw to Taijul.
