BackMumbai Indians announced on Saturday (October 17) that Mahela Jayawardene will be stepping down as the team’s head coach ahead of IPL 2027. The decision brings to an end a journey lasting ten seasons, during which Jayawardene helmed three of MI’s five title wins - in 2017, 2019 and 2020.
Jayawardene was first appointed as head coach ahead of IPL 2017 and stayed in the capacity until the 2022 season. He was then elevated to the post of Global Head of Performance as MI expanded their footprints across overseas leagues, including the SA20, ILT20 and the MLC. Following a forgettable 2024 season, Jayawardene returned as head coach, replacing Mark Boucher ahead of IPL 2025, where MI made it to Qualifier 2. The 2026 season proved to be a disappointing one, however, as they finished second from bottom.
“Mahela has made a significant contribution to Mumbai Indians over the years. His calm leadership, integrity and deep love for the game have meant so much to us,” team owner Nita Ambani said. “On behalf of the entire MI family, I want to thank Mahela for his immense contribution and unwavering commitment over the years. We will always cherish the journey we have shared and the memories we have created together.”
Jayawardene called his MI stint a “very special part of my journey”, citing it as an experience that he will “always treasure.”
“I leave with immense pride in what we have achieved together and will always carry a special place in my heart for MI. I wish the team every success in the years ahead,” Jayawardene said.
MI will now be on the lookout for a new head coach ahead of the mid-November retention deadline for IPL 2027.
