Sydney Thunder have landed a big signing, acquiring the services of Trent Boult for the upcoming 2026/27 Big Bash League (BBL) season. The left-arm pace bowler will be available for the entire campaign, including the finals.

Boult has previously featured in the BBL but in a limited capacity. He played eight games for the Melbourne Stars in 2022/23 as part of his T20 exploits right around the world including the SA20, IPL and MLC.

Really excited to join Sydney Thunder along with Lockie Ferguson – Trent Boult

In a statement, Boult said he is excited to play alongside fellow Kiwi Lockie Ferguson. Ferguson has been a strong performer for the Thunder in recent years, and the franchise will be looking for a return to the playoffs thanks to their overseas pacers.

“I’m really excited to be playing in the Big Bash again and joining Lockie (Ferguson) at Thunder,” Boult said, as quoted by cricket.com.au.

“The way he gets involved is what I’m hoping to mirror and make a mark like he has, not just with the team but the fans as well.

“Cricket has given me so much over the years and I’m still at the stage where I love going out there, contributing, taking wickets and trying to be aggressive in the Powerplay.”

Sydney Thunder finished bottom in BBL 2025/26 after making the final in the previous season. They have relied a lot on their spinners especially at their home ground in Western Sydney. When conditions are flat or suit the pace bowlers, the Thunder have been found wanting.

It is an issue new coach Andrew Flintoff has identified, and is a key reason why he is excited to have both Boult and Ferguson onboard.

“Trent has an amazing reputation for being a great bloke, a team player and a world-class performer,” Flintoff said.

“One of the things we haven’t been able to do in recent times is take wickets with the new ball, so hopefully these two [Boult and Ferguson] can remedy that.”

Sydney Thunder will begin their BBL 2026/27 campaign against Adelaide Strikers at Canberra’s Manuka Oval on Wednesday 16 December.
