'New Zealand came to India, they beat us in the Test series, and that hurt me' – Abhishek Nayar on whitewash

India suffered a historic 3-0 Test series whitewash against New Zealand in October and November 2024, marking the first time the nation had been swept in a three-match home series. The defeat ended an 18-match streak of consecutive Test series victories on home soil, a record that had stood as a cornerstone of Indian cricket's domestic strength. Abhishek Nayar, who served as the team's assistant coach throughout the series, has now opened up about the emotional weight of the result and its implications for Indian cricket.

Nayar reflected on how deeply the loss affected him and the broader cricket community. The series represented a watershed moment for India's coaching setup under head coach Gautam Gambhir, who faced intense scrutiny following the outcome. Nayar's own position within the support staff would change in the weeks that followed.

"New Zealand came to India, they beat us in the Test series, and that hurt me a little, as it did the rest of our fans too. So, it's a big series. There should be a balance in life. World Cup is important, but there is some time for that," Nayar said while speaking on JioHotstar.

The pain of a historic whitewash at home

Nayar viewed the series as a defining moment for Gambhir's tenure and the direction of Indian cricket. He emphasised that the result carried significance beyond the immediate scoreline, shaping how the team would approach future challenges and strategic planning. The whitewash prompted serious conversations about player management and preparation across formats.

"This Test series, for me, is a decisive one for Gautam Gambhir and Indian fans," the former India all-rounder said.

Format juggling and player preparation concerns

Nayar raised critical concerns about the demands placed on India's multi-format players during this period. The tight scheduling between ODI and Test commitments left minimal preparation time for players to transition between the two formats effectively. This juggling act placed considerable strain on those attempting to maintain consistency across both disciplines simultaneously.

Nayar specifically highlighted the challenges faced by KL Rahul and Shubman Gill, both of whom were required to switch between formats with insufficient recovery and preparation windows. He advocated for a more structured approach that would allow Test specialists to focus exclusively on red-ball cricket without the distraction of limited-overs obligations.

"So, I would have liked players like KL Rahul and Shubman Gill, who are playing both formats, to focus only on Test cricket. Because now you have to prepare for the ODIs and, after that, the Tests," Nayar said.

Determination to settle the score

The New Zealand series defeat was swiftly followed by further setbacks in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, where India suffered a 1-3 series loss. These consecutive defeats highlighted the difficulties India faced during this challenging period of international cricket. The back-to-back whitewash and series loss underscored the need for strategic adjustments in how the team managed its resources and player workload.

Looking ahead, Nayar expressed determination to reverse the outcome when India faced New Zealand again. He emphasised the importance of the team performing strongly in away conditions and settling the score in future encounters.

"Just like they beat us here in India, we should beat them there," Nayar said ahead of the five-match ODI series and subsequent two-Test series against New Zealand.
