India have produced several exceptional batters in T20 cricket, with numerous players earning recognition for their explosive strokeplay, consistency and ability to deliver under pressure. Over the years, the shortest format has witnessed some remarkable individual performances, with experienced superstars and emerging talents contributing to India’s success. While several iconic names have dominated discussions around India’s greatest T20 batters, a recent assessment by a former India cricketer has sparked fresh interest in the country’s next generation of batting superstars.

Cheteshwar Pujara picks India’s best T20 batter

Former India batter Cheteshwar Pujara has heaped praise on Abhishek Sharma, describing the left-hander as potentially one of the best T20 players the Indian team has had. Pujara was particularly impressed by how quickly the youngster has achieved significant milestones and established himself as an exciting force in the shortest format.

Speaking on JioStar, Pujara admitted that Abhishek’s rapid progress had exceeded expectations, highlighting the impact he has made through his performances.

“Nobody thought that he (Abhishek) would cross such a big milestone so quickly. But the way Abhishek has performed, I think he is probably one of the best T20 players the Indian team has had so far,” Pujara said.

Abhishek has attracted attention for his aggressive approach, fearless strokeplay and ability to put opposition bowlers under pressure. His performances have strengthened his reputation as one of India’s most exciting young batting talents.

However, Pujara’s assessment was not limited to the runs Abhishek has scored. The former India batter also highlighted the youngster’s growing understanding of the game, suggesting that his development could make him an even more dangerous player in the years ahead.

Pujara draws comparison of the young star with legendary Chris Gayle

Pujara further emphasised Abhishek’s potential by comparing his ability to make a lasting impact in T20 cricket with that of West Indies legend Chris Gayle. Gayle remains one of the most recognisable figures in the format, having built a reputation for his extraordinary power-hitting and ability to dominate bowling attacks. Pujara believes Abhishek possesses the kind of talent that could eventually make his name equally memorable among T20 fans.

“His name will be remembered for a long time. When we talk about the T20 format, we immediately think of Chris Gayle from the West Indies. Abhishek has that kind of ability,” Pujara added.

Pujara also pointed to an important improvement in Abhishek’s batting during his performance in the second T20I between India and West Indies at Indore. Despite being known for his attacking instincts, the young batter showed greater patience by taking time to assess the situation before accelerating.

“The way he showed maturity, especially in Indore, by taking a little time, even though five-six balls is a lot of time for him, shows that he is understanding his game a little better, recognising the opposition’s strengths, and batting accordingly,” Pujara explained.

Pujara’s pick over Rohit Sharma raises eyebrows

Pujara’s comments are particularly noteworthy because India have had several outstanding T20 batters, including Rohit Sharma, who remains one of the most celebrated names in the format. Rohit built an exceptional reputation through his elegant strokeplay, ability to clear the boundary with ease and performances on the biggest stages. His contribution to Indian cricket has extended beyond batting, with his leadership also playing an important role in the team’s achievements.

Although Rohit has retired from T20 internationals, his legacy in the shortest format remains firmly established. His experience, consistency and remarkable ability to change the course of a match have secured his place among India’s T20 greats.

Against this backdrop, Pujara’s decision to single out Abhishek is an interesting endorsement of the youngster’s potential. However, his comments do not necessarily mean that he considers Abhishek superior to Rohit in a direct all-time comparison. Rather, they reflect his belief that the left-hander possesses the ability to become one of India’s defining T20 players.
