BackCalmore Sports picked up their first win of the season with a dramatic 10-run victory over Basingstoke & North Hants in a low-scoring Southern Premier Cricket League (SPCL) Division One battle at May’s Bounty.
On a day dominated by bowlers, Calmore held their nerve superbly after being dismissed for just 108 in 42.3 overs, with Evan Allaway delivering one of the performances of the weekend with seven wickets.
Freddy Williams top-scored with a patient 27 from 58 balls, while Ben Johns added 17 as Calmore attempted to build partnerships on a difficult surface. However, regular wickets prevented the visitors from gaining momentum.
Basingstoke’s bowlers were relentless, with Abhijeet Saranath producing outstanding figures of 4-15 from 10 overs, including four maidens, while Bradley Neal claimed 3-26.
Calmore’s innings also featured 17 wides – the highest individual contribution to the total – while three batters were dismissed for ducks, including Brad Jewer’s golden duck.
Defending a modest target looked like a daunting task, but Evan Allaway delivered a stand-out performance.
The Calmore bowler ripped through the Basingstoke batting line-up with remarkable figures of 7-34 from his 10 overs, reducing the hosts to 56-8 and putting the visitors firmly in control.
His haul included two golden ducks, with Geordie Heaton Ellis dismissed first ball of the innings and Bradley Neal falling lbw without scoring from his first delivery.
At one stage, Basingstoke had lost four batters for ducks as Calmore’s attack tore through the top and middle order.
Dean Nurse and Hayden Tipping briefly threatened a recovery with scores of 23 apiece, but Calmore kept their composure, with Mark Lavelle adding two wickets to seal victory as the hosts were bowled out for 98 in 27.5 overs.
Calmore Sports will hope to make it two wins on the bounce on Saturday when they host Rowledge CC at Loperwood Park, with play starting at 12:30pm.
