BackIndia opener and wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson joined KL Rahul on the list of Indian batters to face a maiden first over in men’s T20Is. Samson failed to score off any of Matt Henry’s six deliveries during the second T20I against New Zealand at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Saturday, October 24.
India captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first, and the visitors restricted New Zealand to 180/5. Glenn Phillips top-scored for the hosts with 70 off 43 balls, including four boundaries and as many sixes. Phillips shared a 116-run stand with Bevon Jacobs, who scored 50 off 40 deliveries.
Matt Henry opened New Zealand’s bowling with six consecutive dot balls against Samson. He repeatedly targeted the channel outside off stump and forced the Indian opener to defend cautiously. Samson was beaten outside the edge several times as Henry maintained a consistent line and length.
Samson became the fifth Indian opener, alongside KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, to achieve the feat in T20Is. Rahul has faced a maiden first over five times, while Dhawan, Rohit and Jaiswal have done so once each.

India’s fast bowlers made an impact early in the innings. Arshdeep Singh dismissed Tim Seifert for seven, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar removed Daryl Mitchell for six. Prince Yadav then bowled Finn Allen for 16 in the final over of the powerplay, leaving New Zealand under pressure.
Glenn Phillips and Bevon Jacobs helped rebuild the innings, but both batters fell after scoring their half-centuries. Michael Bracewell added consecutive boundaries late in the innings to help New Zealand finish at 180/5.
Arshdeep was India’s leading wicket-taker with figures of 2/33. Bhuvneshwar, Prince and Nitish Kumar Reddy took one wicket each. However, Bhuvneshwar conceded 50 runs in his four overs.
New Zealand posted 180/5, their fifth-highest T20I total against India at home. Glenn Phillips and Bevon Jacobs initially focused on rotating the strike and running hard before accelerating in the final seven overs, when New Zealand scored 99 runs.
Speaking at the innings break, Phillips said his team had considered 180 a par score and praised India’s bowling effort. He also highlighted New Zealand’s team culture and their focus on taking extra runs whenever possible, explaining that such efforts could make the difference in a close match.
"(On the total they eventually got) We were thinking about getting to a par score, 180 was par what we thought and I thought India bowled well. It's more about team mentality and culture, we've been playing this way and looking for that extra run in any situation."
