India opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi has received another major responsibility in domestic cricket ahead of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2026. The teenager has been named in a leadership role for Bihar as the team prepares for the upcoming edition of the domestic T20 tournament.

The appointment marks another significant milestone in Suryavanshi’s rapidly progressing career. Having already made his mark in international and franchise cricket, the youngster will now have the chance to showcase his leadership at the senior domestic level.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi set to become youngest captain in T20 cricket

Suryavanshi will captain Bihar in their first two matches of the tournament, with Suraj Kashyap appointed as his deputy. Bihar will begin their campaign against Saurashtra in Indore on November 14 before taking on Railways at the same venue on November 16. This will be the first time the 15-year-old leads the senior Bihar side. With this appointment, Suryavanshi will become the youngest player to captain a team in T20 cricket.

In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the previous record belonged to Mahipal Lomror, who led Rajasthan at the age of 18 years and 67 days in 2018. The appointment also follows his recent experience in a leadership role during the Duleep Trophy. Suryavanshi was named East Zone’s vice-captain for the tournament and briefly took charge during the final when regular skipper Ishan Kishan had to leave the field due to an injury.

Suryavanshi looks to help Bihar improve after disappointing last season

Bihar had a difficult campaign in the previous edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, managing just one victory from seven group-stage matches. Suryavanshi featured in six of those games and made a notable contribution with the bat, scoring a century while maintaining an impressive strike rate of 168.37. The youngster has enjoyed a rapid rise across formats and age groups, having broken several records during his 44-match T20 career.

He also earned a place in India’s T20I setup earlier this year after consistently impressing in domestic and franchise cricket. Suryavanshi most recently featured for India during their tour of New Zealand, where he played two T20Is. His appointment as Bihar captain now presents another opportunity to add to his growing experience and help his state side make a stronger impression in the upcoming domestic competition.
