BackThe Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) has witnessed several spectacular fielding efforts over the years, and the ongoing 2026 season has already delivered another memorable moment. Melbourne Stars all-rounder Annabel Sutherland grabbed the spotlight with an outstanding piece of fielding against Perth Scorchers, producing a stunning diving catch to send veteran batter Sophie Devine back to the pavilion.
Known for her valuable contributions with both bat and ball, Sutherland once again demonstrated that her abilities extend well beyond the two primary departments. Her exceptional effort in the eighth match of WBBL|12 provided one of the standout moments of the contest.
The remarkable moment unfolded during the second delivery of the ninth over of Perth Scorchers’ innings. Melbourne Stars spinner Charlie Dean was operating with Devine at the crease when she bowled a slower delivery outside the off stump. Looking to capitalise on the opportunity, Devine attempted an aerial sweep, hoping to find the boundary. However, she failed to get the required timing and elevation on her shot, leaving the ball hanging in the air.
Stationed at wide long-on, Sutherland immediately sprang into action. She covered considerable ground at pace before launching herself forward to complete a brilliant diving catch. Her excellent anticipation, athleticism and safe pair of hands ensured that Devine’s innings came to an end. The dismissal was particularly valuable for Melbourne Stars, as Devine is an experienced campaigner capable of changing the course of a match with her aggressive batting. The WBBL’s official social media account shared the footage of the dismissal, with Sutherland’s effort quickly becoming a talking point.

Meanwhile, Melbourne Stars produced an impressive bowling performance after winning the toss and electing to field first. The decision proved fruitful as their bowling unit consistently troubled the Perth Scorchers batters and prevented them from building substantial partnerships. The visitors struggled to accelerate throughout their innings and eventually finished with 124/9 in their allotted 20 overs.
Beth Mooney provided a modest contribution at the top of the order, scoring 17 runs from 15 deliveries. Alana King chipped in with 18 runs, but neither batter could convert their start into a substantial innings. For Melbourne Stars, Maisy Gibson and Sophie Day were particularly effective with the ball. Gibson returned impressive figures of 2/10, while Day claimed two wickets for 17 runs. Dean also made an important contribution, finishing with two wickets despite conceding 29 runs. Sutherland’s spectacular catch added another highlight to an otherwise disciplined fielding and bowling display from the Stars.
