Delhi Capitals have appointed former Sri Lanka fast bowler Chaminda Vaas as their new fast-bowling coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season. Vaas will replace Munaf Patel, who served as the team’s bowling coach for the last two seasons.

Vaas is one of Sri Lanka’s most successful bowlers. He took 355 wickets in 111 Test matches and 400 wickets in One Day Internationals (ODIs) during his international career. He was also an important member of Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup-winning team.

Delhi Capitals announced his appointment through their official X account. The franchise welcomed the former Sri Lankan fast bowler, calling him a World Cup winner and one of the country’s greatest fast bowlers.

Vaas will be part of Delhi Capitals’ new coaching team led by former India captain Sourav Ganguly. The franchise recently added former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh to its support staff as a batting and assistant coach.

Delhi Capitals are yet to win an IPL title. They reached the final only once, in 2020, and failed to qualify for the playoffs in the last two seasons. The team will hope that changes to the coaching staff help them perform better in IPL 2027.

Why Have Delhi Capitals Changed Their Coaching Staff?

Delhi Capitals are making several changes to their coaching staff ahead of the new season. The franchise has brought in experienced former international players as it looks to improve its performance.

Chaminda Vaas will take charge of the fast bowlers, while Yuvraj Singh has joined as a batting and assistant coach. Sourav Ganguly will lead the new coaching setup.

Munaf Patel held the bowling coach role for the last two seasons but has now been replaced by Vaas. The changes come as Delhi look to build a stronger team and challenge for their first IPL title.

Why Will JSW Group Manage Delhi Capitals for the Next Two Seasons?

Delhi Capitals are jointly owned by the GMR Group and JSW Group. The two groups take turns managing the franchise in two-year cycles.

GMR Group’s latest management period ended with the 2026 season, and JSW Group has now taken charge for the next two seasons.

After taking over, JSW decided to make changes to the coaching and support staff. Former India players Venugopal Rao, who served as cricket director, Hemang Badani, who was the head coach, and Munaf Patel were among those who left their previous roles.

The new management will hope its decisions help Delhi Capitals improve their results in the upcoming seasons.

What Makes Chaminda Vaas a Good Choice for Delhi Capitals?

Chaminda Vaas was known for his ability to swing the new ball and bowl accurately in different conditions. He was one of Sri Lanka’s leading fast bowlers during his playing career and played a key role in the team’s 1996 World Cup victory.

His international record includes 355 Test wickets and 400 ODI wickets. His experience could help Delhi Capitals’ fast bowlers improve their line, length and use of swing, especially in the early overs.

Vaas has also worked as a bowling coach with Sri Lanka on several occasions. His knowledge of international cricket and experience working with fast bowlers could be useful for Delhi Capitals as they prepare for IPL 2027.

What Is Chaminda Vaas’ Coaching Experience?

Vaas has worked with several teams since the end of his playing career. He began his coaching journey with a short stint in New Zealand before taking up the role of Sri Lanka’s bowling coach from 2013 to 2015.

He was later appointed Ireland’s bowling coach for the 2016 T20 World Cup. After that, he returned to work with Sri Lanka in the same role.

His experience with different teams and players gives him useful knowledge of fast bowling across formats. Delhi Capitals will hope he can use that experience to help their bowlers perform better in the IPL.

Has Chaminda Vaas Played in the IPL Before?

Yes, Vaas has played in the IPL. He represented the now-defunct Deccan Chargers during the first three seasons of the tournament, from 2008 to 2010.

He played 13 matches and took 18 wickets for the franchise. His experience of playing in the IPL could help him understand the demands of the tournament and guide Delhi Capitals’ fast bowlers.

With Vaas joining the coaching staff and Yuvraj Singh taking up a new role, Delhi Capitals are preparing for a fresh start under their new setup. The franchise will hope these changes help them qualify for the playoffs and compete for their first IPL title in 2027.
