Wasim Jaffer, Connor Williams, Ramesh Powar and Jacob Martin were among the notable names interviewed by the Ashok Malhotra-led Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) on Thursday for a position on the senior national selection committee.

The vacancy arose after Ajit Agarkar, the incumbent chairman, moved on, prompting the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to invite applications for the post. The appointment could also have a bearing on the leadership of the selection panel, with the BCCI now weighing its options.

There had been speculation that former India off-spinner Pragyan Ojha, who has played 24 Tests, could take over as chairman after continuing as a member of the panel for a while. However, Jaffer’s appearance for the interview has added another dimension to the discussion. The former India opener played 31 Tests, giving him a higher tally of appearances in the format than Ojha.

As per the convention, the selector with the most Test appearances among the appointed members becomes the chairman of the committee. Jaffer’s candidature, therefore, could prove significant if he is selected for the panel.

One of the most prolific batters in Indian domestic cricket, Jaffer finished his first-class career with more than 19,000 runs. He was a mainstay of Mumbai’s formidable Ranji Trophy side before moving to Vidarbha, where he continued to make a substantial contribution. His ability to bat for long periods and his extensive experience of the domestic circuit could serve him well in a selection role.

Jaffer represented India in 31 Tests and two ODIs. Although his international career did not match the longevity of his domestic journey, his understanding of Indian cricket across levels remains a notable aspect of his candidature.

Powar, meanwhile, brings international playing experience as well as coaching credentials, having served as head coach of the Indian women’s team. He was earlier tipped as the front-runner for the national junior selection committee chairman role. However, with him not applying, Dodda Ganesh - a former India international - could bag that role.

As far as the senior selection committee is concerned, Williams and Martin also have backgrounds in domestic cricket, adding to the range of experience represented among those interviewed.
