Mohammed Shami has been left out of India’s Test and ODI squads for the tour of New Zealand, while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are set to return for the one-day series.

The selectors have instead leaned on Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Anshul Kamboj and Nitish Kumar Reddy for the Test attack.

Akash Deep is back in the Test squad after showing good form and fitness in the Irani Cup and, more recently, in the first round of the Ranji Trophy for Bengal.

Kamboj also returns to the red-ball side, having made his debut in Manchester in July 2025. Siraj and the seam-bowling allrounder Nitish Kumar Reddy add further depth to the pace group.

India will field a different squad in the last two ODIs to give players like Shubman Gill more time to prepare for Tests. Shreyas Iyer will take over captaincy in Gill's absence.

Jasprit Bumrah won’t play in the ODIs but will return to lead the attack in the Tests. The series opens with the first game in Wellington on November 19.

Prasidh Krishna has been picked for the Tests, though his place in the ODI series depends on fitness clearance.

Rishabh Pant is also in the Test squad subject to clearance. He suffered a side strain at the recent Irani Cup while captaining Rest of India, hurting himself while playing a sweep in the first innings. That injury ruled him out of the first two unofficial Tests against New Zealand A.
