BackFormer Indian captain Rohit Sharma has added another huge achievement to his name. The 39-year-old Rohit Sharma created history on Saturday, November 7, by becoming the batter with the most sixes against New Zealand in ODI cricket.
The senior Indian opener achieved this special milestone during the second ODI between India and New Zealand at the Hnry Stadium in Wellington. He smashed two sixes in his 23-run knock off 28 balls while chasing a target of 135 runs, surpassing former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi.
Rohit Sharma needed two sixes to break Shahid Afridi's record of 50 sixes against New Zealand in ODI cricket. He completed the job by hitting two sixes against New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Jamieson.
His first six came on the second ball of the seventh over, while he smashed another maximum on the second ball of the ninth over. These two shots took his tally to 51 sixes against New Zealand, becoming the player with the most sixes against the Black Caps in the ODI format.
Rohit has now hit 51 sixes in 34 innings across 36 ODIs against New Zealand. Afridi finished his career with 50 sixes in 35 innings from 38 matches against the same team. West Indies legend Chris Gayle is third on this list with 45 sixes in 28 innings, while Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya is fourth (41).
Rohit Sharma is already at the top of the list of batters with the most sixes in ODI cricket and international cricket. He has now smashed 85 sixes against New Zealand across all three formats.
However, Chris Gayle still holds the overall record for the most international sixes against the Kiwis. The former West Indies star hit 87 sixes in 57 innings across 51 matches between 2002 and 2019.
Rohit has played 62 matches against New Zealand and scored 2,183 runs in 68 innings. He needs just three more sixes in the remaining three ODIs to break Gayle's record.
The Indian star also has a chance to reach another massive milestone. If he hits 15 sixes in the next three ODIs, he will complete 100 international sixes against New Zealand. He has already crossed the 100-six mark against Australia and the West Indies.
