BackIndia scripted history in Christchurch by becoming the first men's team to reach 200 outright wins in T20 Internationals. The milestone arrived in their second T20I against New Zealand, which also happened to be India's 300th match in the shortest format of men's cricket. With that, India joined Pakistan as the only two sides to have featured in as many as 300 T20Is.
The victory was far from straightforward. India found themselves under pressure for large portions of their chase on a difficult pitch. However, Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy took charge in the death overs and guided the side over the line with one ball to spare. Across their 300 T20Is, India have lost just 83 matches, producing a win-loss ratio of 2.409. That figure is the best among the top five teams with the most T20I appearances and also the best across all 12 ICC Full Member nations.
New Zealand now trail the two-match series 2-0. India had won the opening T20I by successfully chasing down a target of 226. The remaining fixtures in New Zealand include the third T20I in Wellington, the fourth in Auckland and the series finale in Hamilton. A five-match ODI series then follows from November 4, with a two-match Test series beginning on November 19.
The partnership between Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy was the defining passage of play in Christchurch. The two batters came together under pressure and remained unbeaten, adding 69 runs off just 30 balls. That stand is now the highest for India for the seventh wicket or lower in T20 Internationals.
A significant part of their contribution came in the closing stages of the innings. India chased down 68 runs in the final five overs, which is the most they have managed in that phase of any T20I. The previous record in that period stood at 60, set against Pakistan at the MCG during the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Should Sooryavanshi keep batting at No. 3?
The earlier record for India's highest lower-order partnership in T20Is was an unbeaten 63 between Dinesh Karthik and Krunal Pandya for the seventh wicket, also against New Zealand, in Hamilton in 2019. Tilak and Reddy have now surpassed that mark.
Reaching 200 outright wins in 300 T20Is places India in a category of their own in men's cricket. No other men's team has crossed the 200-win mark in the format. Their win-loss ratio of 2.409 across those 300 games is the strongest among the leading T20I-playing nations and the best of any ICC Full Member side.
Beyond the 200 outright victories, India have also claimed five additional wins via the Super Over and one through a bowl-out, further underlining their dominance in the format over the years.
