BackVirat Kohli could miss the chance to play an international match in his home city this December, with reports suggesting that India’s opening ODI against Sri Lanka may be shifted from Delhi because of ongoing renovation work at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
The match is scheduled for December 13, 2026, as the opening fixture of India’s three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. The venue was originally allotted to Delhi, but the stadium’s outfield redevelopment has raised questions about whether it will be ready in time.
According to a report, work to replace the existing outfield with a sand-based surface is expected to take another three to four months. If that timeline holds, the ground could remain unavailable for cricket until the 2027 Indian Premier League season.
However, a venue change has not been officially confirmed. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had previously rejected reports that the fixture would be moved, while its published schedule continues to list Delhi as the host venue.
The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) is upgrading the stadium’s outfield to improve drainage and reduce delays caused by rain.
Sand-based outfields are designed to allow water to drain more efficiently, helping the playing surface recover faster after wet weather. A source quoted in the report said the upgrade could reduce waterlogging and the need to cover large portions of the ground during rain interruptions.
The renovation has already affected Delhi’s domestic cricket schedule. The DDCA shifted the team’s Ranji Trophy home matches to the Air Force Complex Ground in Palam while work continues at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Kohli, who hails from Delhi, could lose an opportunity to play an ODI in front of his home crowd if the match is relocated.
The former India captain last played an ODI at the Arun Jaitley Stadium during the 2023 ODI World Cup, when India faced Afghanistan. A December appearance would have been a major draw for local fans, particularly given the excitement surrounding his return to international cricket in the capital.
The India-Sri Lanka series is scheduled to begin in Delhi on December 13, with the teams set to play three ODIs before moving on to a three-match T20I series. For now, the opening ODI remains listed for the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Any relocation would require an official announcement from the BCCI.
With renovation work continuing and the match date approaching, the stadium’s readiness remains the key issue. Fans will have to wait for confirmation on whether Delhi can host the series opener, or whether Kohli’s home ODI will take place at another venue.
