India is undoubtedly one Daryl Mitchell’s of favourite opponents in ODI cricket. New Zealand’s middle order stalwart, one of the elite batters going around in 50-over cricket, averages a superb 74.10 against them.
Mitchell has notched up six 50+ scores in 11 innings. This includes four centuries, with his proactive batting against a spin a cornerstone of his success.
“I guess he won’t mind me saying this, but when he [Mitchell] first came over [from Australia], he wasn’t a very good player of spin,” said Mitchell Santner, as quoted by Cricinfo. “And I told him that and I was all over him [with my left-arm spin].
“But I think he’s one of those guys, he’s gone away, he’s worked hard, he’s added a few more shots to his repertoire, and he gets in the fight, which we love. Other teams might not love it as much, but we do.”
Here are Mitchell’s numbers against India:
Currently, Mitchell only boasts a better average against England (93.50) with 374 runs in seven innings including three not outs. However, nearly half of his centuries (9 in total) come against India.
Here is a look at the matches Mitchell notched up three figures against the men in blue:
In the 2026 series, Mitchell was named player of the series with 352 runs in three matches. The Black Caps, fielding an inexperienced team, won that series 2-1.
