BackAdelaide Strikers’ Laura Wolvaardt produced a brilliant fielding effort to dismiss Melbourne Renegades opener Hayley Matthews during their Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2026 encounter at Junction Oval in Melbourne. The West Indies all-rounder was in an aggressive mood and had given the Renegades a flying start with her attacking strokeplay.
However, Matthews’ innings came to an end just short of a half-century when she mistimed a shot against Anesu Mushangwe. Wolvaardt was perfectly positioned to complete the catch, handing the Strikers a much-needed breakthrough in the eighth over.
Matthews had scored 49 off just 32 deliveries, striking 10 boundaries to put the Renegades in a strong position. Strikers captain Tahlia McGrath brought Mushangwe back into the attack for the eighth over in an attempt to slow down the scoring rate and break the opening partnership.
After conceding a boundary earlier in the over, Mushangwe managed to outfox Matthews with a cleverly flighted delivery on the fifth ball. The batter attempted to play an aggressive aerial shot but failed to get the desired connection, sending the ball towards Wolvaardt, who held on to a sharp catch. Matthews walked back just one run short of her half-century, leaving the Renegades at 64/2.

Despite losing Matthews, Melbourne Renegades went on to post a massive 188/3 in their 20 overs. Courtney Webb contributed an unbeaten 52 off 42 deliveries, but it was Georgia Wareham who provided the biggest fireworks towards the end of the innings. She smashed an unbeaten 73 off just 31 balls, hitting six fours and four sixes to take the Renegades to a commanding total.
In response, Adelaide Strikers struggled to keep up with the required run rate despite Maia Bouchier’s 54 off 38 deliveries and Emma De Broughe’s contribution of 27 runs. Melbourne’s bowlers maintained pressure throughout the chase, with Milly Illingworth picking up three wickets for 29 runs and Tayla Vlaeminck claiming two for 16. The Strikers eventually finished at 152/8, handing the Renegades a comprehensive 36-run victory.
