Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has dismissed reports suggesting that he could enter the IPL 2027 mini-auction after acquiring British citizenship. The pacer addressed the speculation after registering for the Afghanistan Premier League (APL) player draft as a UK national in the Platinum category.

Amir recently moved into English domestic cricket. He represented Nottinghamshire in the T20 Blast and Trent Rockets in The Hundred 2026 as a local player, while his British passport brought comparisons with former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood, who previously featured in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Mohammad Amir Issues Official Statement to Rule Out IPL 2027 Auction Entry

Mohammad Amir put an end to the speculation surrounding his possible participation in the upcoming auction. Taking to X, the former Pakistan international clarified that reports about his IPL registration were incorrect. He also told Cricbuzz that he is not entering the auction.

"Hi everyone just wanted to clarify news regarding IPL is not true," Amir wrote on X.

The IPL 2027 mini-auction is scheduled to take place in Goa on December 16. The discussion around Amir's eligibility gained momentum after the BCCI announced that overseas players could register through their respective cricket boards. The registration window closes on November 23.

Amir, who is now treated as a domestic player in England, could technically have registered through the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). For the APL draft, he signed up as a UK national in the Platinum category, although Pakistan was listed as his country of residence.

British Citizenship Brings Azhar Mahmood's IPL Journey Back Into Focus

Mohammad Amir acquired British citizenship in May 2026 through his marriage to UK citizen and lawyer Narjis Khan. The change in nationality has allowed him to feature as a local player in English competitions, including the T20 Blast and The Hundred.

He joined Nottinghamshire in June for the remainder of the T20 Blast season before representing Trent Rockets in The Hundred. His situation drew comparisons with former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood.

Mahmood also acquired British citizenship and played in the IPL between 2012 and 2015. Mahmood represented Kings XI Punjab, later known as Punjab Kings, and Kolkata Knight Riders.

Pakistani players have not featured in the IPL since the inaugural 2008 season. Even if he had registered, securing a place in the auction would not have guaranteed him a contract. At least one franchise would still have needed to show interest and bid for him.

Mohammad Amir Continues Franchise Career After 2024 International Retirement

Mohammad Amir retired from international cricket in 2024 after representing Pakistan in 159 matches across all three formats. He played 36 Tests, 61 ODIs and 62 T20Is for Pakistan.

The left-arm pacer took 119 wickets in Tests, 81 in ODIs and 71 in T20Is. He previously reversed his international retirement in 2020 before bringing his Pakistan career to an end after the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Despite retiring from international cricket, Amir has continued to play in domestic and franchise T20 competitions around the world. His British citizenship has opened up opportunities in English cricket, where he can feature as a local player rather than an overseas recruit.
