BackDelhi Capitals – Sri Lankan fast-bowling legend Chaminda Vaas has joined Delhi Capitals as their fast-bowling coach ahead of IPL 2027, adding another experienced name to a coaching setup that already includes Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh. The franchise announced the appointment through a social media video featuring Vaas. A member of Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup-winning team, the former left-arm pacer brings extensive international experience to the role. Although he previously played in the IPL for Deccan Chargers between 2008 and 2010, the upcoming season will mark his first coaching assignment in the league. Vaas replaces Munaf Patel, who served as Delhi’s bowling coach over the previous two seasons, as the franchise reshapes its support staff in pursuit of its first IPL title.
Vaas is among Sri Lanka’s most accomplished former fast bowlers. His international career included 355 Test wickets and 400 wickets in One Day Internationals, making him a significant figure in the country’s cricketing history. He was also part of the Sri Lankan side that won the 1996 ODI World Cup.
At Delhi Capitals, his primary responsibility will be to work with the team’s fast bowlers and help them prepare for the demands of the IPL. His international playing background and previous coaching assignments could provide the franchise with additional expertise in pace bowling.
The 52-year-old has worked with Sri Lanka’s men’s national team on three separate occasions. His coaching career also included a short-term assignment with New Zealand before he returned to work with Sri Lanka from 2013 to 2015. In 2016, he was appointed bowling coach of Ireland for the T20 World Cup, after which Sri Lanka hired him again.
His appointment gives Delhi Capitals a specialist bowling coach with experience of international cricket across different teams and competitions.
The appointment of Vaas follows a series of changes to the Delhi Capitals coaching staff. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly was named head coach on October 6, returning to a franchise with which he has been associated since 2019.
The role represents Ganguly’s first assignment as an IPL head coach after his involvement with Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 competition. His return places him at the centre of Delhi’s preparations as the franchise looks to improve its results in the upcoming season.
Vaas will work within the coaching structure led by Ganguly. The combination brings together experience in team leadership and international bowling, with the franchise hoping the revamped staff can help its players perform more consistently throughout the tournament.
Delhi Capitals also appointed former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh as assistant and batting coach on October 13. The position marks his first formal coaching role, adding another prominent former international player to the franchise’s support team.
Yuvraj was a key member of India’s squads that won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 and the ODI World Cup in 2011. His experience as an international batter and all-rounder is expected to be an important part of the team’s preparations, particularly in developing batting plans and supporting players.
The appointment also reunites Yuvraj with Ganguly in a professional setup. Alongside Vaas, he will form part of a coaching group combining experience in batting, pace bowling and team management.
The coaching changes follow Delhi Capitals’ decision to move on from their previous setup under head coach Hemang Badani, after two seasons. The franchise missed the playoffs in 2025 and finished sixth in IPL 2026, according to the supplied report.
Delhi have yet to win an IPL title, and the new coaching team will be tasked with helping the side take a step forward in the competition. Ganguly’s leadership, Yuvraj’s batting experience and Vaas’s fast-bowling knowledge give the franchise a coaching group with substantial international cricket backgrounds.
However, appointments alone will not determine the team’s performance. Squad balance, player availability, form and execution during matches will also shape Delhi’s campaign. The franchise’s next challenge will be to translate the experience of its revamped coaching staff into consistent performances when IPL 2027 begins.
