BackIndia have named Shubman Gill captain for the first three ODIs against New Zealand, with vice-captain Shreyas Iyer set to take over the leadership for the final two matches as selectors manage the squad around the short turnaround between the Test and ODI series.
Gill will lead a 16-member squad for the opening three matches, with Iyer as his deputy. Iyer will captain the fourth and fifth ODIs, while wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has been appointed vice-captain for the final leg.
Senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be available throughout the five-match series. All-rounders Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel and Naman Dhir have also been included in both squads.
Wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul and pacers Anshul Kamboj and Prasidh Krishna are part of the first three-match squad only. Krishna’s availability for the opening phase remains subject to fitness as he recovers from a left hamstring injury. The three players will leave the ODI group to prepare for the subsequent Test series.
For the final two matches, selectors have brought in left-handed batter Tilak Varma and pacer Auqib Nabi. Wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra and fast bowler Yash Thakur have received their maiden ODI call-ups. Thakur has represented India in T20Is.
The squads also include left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, seamer Mohammed Siraj, left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav, tall pacer Gurnoor Brar and batter Ruturaj Gaikwad.
There is no recall for senior pacers Mohammed Shami or Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Bhuvneshwar, who was added to India’s squad for the fifth T20I against the West Indies in Bengaluru, is set to feature in the T20I series in New Zealand beginning October 22.
The five-match ODI series begins on November 4 at Eden Park in Auckland. The second match will be played in Wellington on November 7, followed by the third at Seddon Park in Hamilton on November 10. The final two ODIs are scheduled for November 13 and 15 at Mount Maunganui. All matches are set to begin at 7:30 a.m. IST.
