BackNew Delhi, October 17 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian cricket team has announced its squad for the upcoming five-match ODI series against New Zealand, but notable is the omission of promising opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has voiced his discontent over the selection committee’s decision to leave Jaiswal out of the lineup.
On his YouTube channel, Ashwin stated, “If Shubman Gill is not playing in the last two ODIs, Yashasvi Jaiswal should definitely get that spot. This is very disappointing, as it could severely impact his confidence. He has been a run machine lately. It’s the responsibility of the team management and selectors to provide him opportunities wherever possible, but he is not getting those chances at all. This is not fair.”
Ashwin emphasized that denying regular opportunities to a player of Jaiswal’s caliber could negatively affect his development at a crucial stage in his career. He questioned the selectors about Jaiswal’s recent appearances in ODIs, T20s, and Tests, expressing concern over the young talent’s lack of game time.
“It’s unfortunate. It is certainly the selectors’ and team management’s duty to take care of Yashasvi Jaiswal. He is a valuable talent. They must give this young player the chance to regain his rhythm,” Ashwin added.
At just 24 years old, Jaiswal has played six ODIs, scoring 285 runs, including two centuries. His highest score, an unbeaten 116, came in his last match against Afghanistan on June 20, 2026, where he scored 110 runs off 86 balls.
